It is a frightening post-apocalyptic vision but I also found the spiritual warfare aspect of the book interesting.

I can see how On Writing could become a favourite as it is much more than a 'how-to' manual.

Let me know how you find 'Revival' - while horror is not a genre I enjoy, I can see that King writes more broadly than that and there is no doubt that he can write.
Jeanette O'Haganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11057798704247611224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515660504291275491.post-41327184849457479322014-11-25T16:40:07.718+11:002014-11-25T16:40:07.718+11:00Jeanette, I've been waiting for this one to co...Jeanette, I've been waiting for this one to come up. It was the first craft book I read and is still the one I love the most. That might have something to do with it being the first and also being one I've read cover-to-cover. Most I use as reference guides so often don't read them cover-to-cover.

"Write a lot, read a lot", yes, still use that when encouraging other writers and his 2,000 words a day was the foundation of how I wrote Angelguard all those years ago in 2003.

BTW, 'The Stand' is still the only novel of King's I've read and golly gosh did it scare me. I read it as a teenager and relatively new Christian but may have also planted a seed regarding acknowledging that spiritual warfare is going on all around us. I understand they're making a 4 movie adaptation of it. I have just bought his latest "Revival" as it's premise sounded interesting.Ian Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00192687613923596829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515660504291275491.post-20623491654496432922014-11-24T20:39:03.189+11:002014-11-24T20:39:03.189+11:00Thanks Narelle. I found his thoughts on characterization and theme helpful - but I particularly liked his fleshing out of the nuts and bolts of the actual writing process and his encouragement to take one's writing seriously.Jeanette O'Haganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11057798704247611224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515660504291275491.post-76340606427515462842014-11-24T19:13:09.934+11:002014-11-24T19:13:09.934+11:00Hi Jeanette, I read 'On Writing' many year...Hi Jeanette, I read 'On Writing' many years ago (borrowed it from the library) and found it very helpful. It was too long ago to remember exactly why, but it was definitely the writing craft sections that resonated with me. I could probably re-read it and discover a different aspect of the book is relevant to me now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I did find it interesting to see how that influenced his writing though I think once could easily just read the middle third and bit on the writing journey and come away inspired :) Jeanette O'Haganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11057798704247611224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515660504291275491.post-1071069777202669602014-11-24T09:19:55.513+11:002014-11-24T09:19:55.513+11:00I have this book in my collection. Some of the personal experiences he mentions seem as horrific as his fictional stories, starting from his childhood :) It's been a long time since I've read it, and you've inspired me to search for his writing advice again.
