Box Sets: A Reader Perspective

By Iola Goulton

Over the last three weeks, Narelle Atkins has been sharing about the development, writing, publishing and marketing of her first indie novella, His Perfect Catch, released as part of the SPLASH! box set with eight other writers.

Shortly after I’d finished editing His Perfect Catch I was approached by Autumn Macarthur, one of the other contributing authors, to see if I’d like to review SPLASH! on Amazon. If you’ve been reading my posts here on Australasian Christian writers, you’ll know that Amazon doesn’t permit reviewers to review any book in which they have a financial interest. Being the editor constitutes a financial interest, even though I only edited one novella in a collection of nine, and I have no ongoing financial interest (editors work for a set dollar figure, not a percentage of sales!).

Anyway, even if I can’t review SPLASH! on Amazon, I can review it on my blog, which I have done and you can click here to read my review.

But in reading the nine novellas (somewhere around 250,000 words in total) as a reader rather than as an editor or proofreader did highlight some issues:

1. You can never have too much editing or proofreading

On one of Narelle’s blog posts, one person asked about the editing process, and specifically whether one person had done a full read-through of the complete box set to ensure consistency. The answer to that is ‘yes’ … that person was me, and I was reading as a reader/reviewer, not a final proofreader (as Narelle has mentioned, each of the participating authors was responsible for proofreading a portion of the full manuscript).

I did notice a few minor issues, which I communicated to Narelle and she passed on to the group leader. I subsequently had follow-up emails from authors in the group to clarify some of the issues I’d raised (I questioned the occupation of one character, and was amused to find that hadn’t been their original occupation—she’d changed it part-way through the writing process. After my comment, she changed it back).
Advice: Yes, someone needs to read the full collection through before publication, ideally someone fresh who is going to read the words on the page, not the words she thinks are on the page (which is what we tend to do when we proof our own work). However, this could be difficult, as few people are willing or able to read/proof 250,000+ words in a very short timeframe.

2. You can never have too much editing or proofreading

All nine novellas had been professionally edited, by nine different people each with different editing styles and standards. This meant there were slight differences between the novellas, even though they had agreed they would all use US spelling and grammar rules. For example, the dictionary says resume can be spelled without any accent marks, with an accent mark on the final ‘e’, or accents on both ‘e’s’. Two authors used the word resume, but each used a different version. Yes, it’s likely only a picky editor like me would notice that!

3. You can never have too much editing or proofreading (are you seeing a pattern yet?)

Indie authors have limited funds, which means their books aren’t necessarily edited and proofread as often as traditionally published books (not that traditionally published books are exempt from editing errors). One novella had the other woman (not the heroine) touching the hero in a way that made his knees “week”. The story had been edited, revised and proofread, but they’d all missed this one line.

Please don't think I'm criticising any of the other editors involved. I'm not. I'm simply saying one or two rounds of editing might not be enough. I recently read a blog post where our own Kara Isaac commented that her upcoming novel is currently undergoing its fourth round of editing by the publisher, and it's not due to be published until January 2016. Or is that March? Anyway, that's at least three rounds more editing than most indie authors can afford.

4. Theme

I did enjoy the water theme to each of the novellas, and the variety of international settings, from Africa to Australia. I do believe this helps with engaging readers, a vital part of marketing.

5. Story length

The novellas appear in the SPLASH! collection in order of author last name, which means Narelle Atkins’s novella is first and Marion Ueckermann’s is last. While there is an obvious logic to this, it did have a drawback: length. The novellas varied from 20,000 to 35,000 words in length. This meant some novellas were more than 50% longer than the story before … and when a longer novella came immediately after a short novella, it did mean the longer story dragged because my reader expectations around length had been set by the shorter story. I got to the 2/3rd mark in the later novella, and was thinking it was time for it to end … because 2/3 of a 35,000 word novella is close to 24,000 words, which was longer than the shortest novella.

Advice: ordering the stories from shortest to longest (or perhaps longest to shortest) would fool the reader (me) into believing they were all similar length, because I wouldn’t have perceived the 35,000-word novella as ‘long’ if it had followed a 30,000-word novella.

6. Front and back matter

On a related note, some of the stories had a lot more front and back matter than others. In this case, I think the first story (Narelle’s) set the standard, and I found some of the books had too much front or back matter (and one author had back matter that I thought would have been better shared at the front). I would suggest keeping the front and back matter minimal in a box set—there will be plenty of room for additional acknowledgements and author notes in the individual release.

I would absolutely echo Narelle’s comments about the added market visibility of participating in a multi-author box set. I follow several of the authors in the set, and saw SPLASH! coming up in my Facebook and Twitter feeds a lot in the weeks before and during the book launch.

And it's a great read, and is available for a limited time, and for less than a dollar!

How to Write and Publish a Multi-Author Indie Box Set: Preparing to Launch

By Narelle Atkins

Last week I talked about the middle stage of an indie box set group project, drawing on my experiences from publishing my first indie novella in SPLASH! Today I’m finishing my three part series on how to indie publish a fiction box set collection with a group of authors.

After the manuscript submission deadline for the individual stories has passed, your group will be focused on the final preparations for the box set release.

Box Set Formatting

Your box set will need to be formatted for Amazon, and also the other ebook retailers if you choose to not sell exclusively with Amazon. For SPLASH!, our group decided to distribute the box set through Amazon and Draft2Digital. Our group leader volunteered to format the box set manuscript, including all the front and back matter. Each group member received a copy of the formatted SPLASH! document for proofreading.

Box Set Proofreading

As I mentioned last week, each SPLASH! group member was responsible for submitting an edited manuscript prior to the May 1 deadline. We were also responsible for proofing a portion of the SPLASH! document. The focus of our proofreading was on locating any typos or formatting errors. Each group member had two weeks to proofread the document and advise the other group members if they came across any errors in their individual novellas.

Set up the Pre-order and Distribution Channels

Each of your distribution channels will have deadlines regarding the uploading of the final version of your box set file. It’s important to set realistic deadlines for group members and allow time for the book production aspects of the box set. For SPLASH!, we allocated six weeks from our May 1 deadline to produce the box set manuscript and meet our pre-order obligations with our distributors.

Pre-order and Release Dates for the Individual Titles

If the box set contains brand new titles, your group will need to make a decision on when to set up pre-orders and release the individual titles. The large majority of multi-author box sets are a limited time offer with an expiry date. It’s likely you’ll have readers who will prefer to post reviews on the individual titles in addition to, or instead of, the box set. Your initial marketing focus will be on the box set, and your reader-reviewers will appreciate having all the individual titles available for sale within a month of the box set release date.

Create Buzz and Implement the Group Marketing Plan

The few weeks prior to the box set pre-order becoming available is the time to define your group book promotion and marketing plans. Once the pre-order is live, your group can kick off their marketing and promotion activities, including social media and blogging. Your group will need to determine a marketing budget and make decisions regarding paid advertising for the box set. Your group members can let their readers know about the upcoming box set release via their author newsletters. For SPLASH!, we decided to organize a Facebook Party Event to celebrate the box set release.

Street Teams and Reviewers

Each of your group members, if they’re already published prior to participating in the box set, will most likely have at least a few readers who review their books. You may have group members with a street team of readers who help them promote their book releases. The group can pool together their resources and contact their readers who may be interesting in reviewing the box set.

Social Media and Blogs

For SPLASH!, each group member made a commitment to promote the box set. We all used a variety of social media tools to reach out to readers in our genre. We set up a SPLASH! Pinterest Board as a home base for all our blog posts relating to the box set. We created a Blog Hop to help readers find posts relating to SPLASH! A number of SPLASH! authors are also members of group blogs, including Inspy Romance and International Christian Fiction Writers. We coordinated our schedules to post promotional material on the blogs and social media.

Launch Day Promotions

Our SPLASH! Facebook Party was the main focus of our launch day promotions. It was challenging to co-ordinate the party across time zones in North America, UK, South Africa and Australia. In my time zone, the SPLASH! online Facebook party started at 7am on June 24, which was 5pm-7pm on the US East Coast on our June 23 release day. It was an early start for me, and provided a great opportunity to chat with our readers and give away prizes.

Have Fun!

Indie box sets provide a wonderful opportunity to work with other authors in a fun and professional environment. I loved participating in SPLASH! and I’d definitely consider doing another box set collection that fitted in with my schedule. Valerie Comer has talked about her thoughts on box set collections on the International Christian Fiction Writers blog. Marion Ueckermann shared our thoughts on participating in SPLASH! on the Beauty for Ashes blog in South Africa.

I hope you’ve found this series helpful. Please leave a comment if you have any questions about box set collections. If you embark on your own multi-author box set adventure, enjoy the journey!

How to Write and Publish a Multi-Author Indie Box Set: The Middle

By Narelle Atkins

Last week I talked about how to set up an indie box set group project, drawing on my experiences from publishing my first indie novella in SPLASH! Today I’m posting the second in a three part series on how to indie publish a fiction box set collection with a group of authors.

Box Set Title

Your group will need to select a title for your box set collection. If the individual stories are connected via a theme, it can make it easier to choose a title with a strong marketing hook. For example, the SPLASH! box set has a water theme which we used to name our box set.

Box Set Cover Art

Important decisions need to be made by the group regarding cover art. This includes defining the group budget for cover art, selecting a cover designer, reviewing stock photo options, and forming a consensus on the style and content of the cover art image. It’s helpful to have a genre and theme to use as a starting point. For SPLASH!, we wanted the box set cover image to have a fun, contemporary, summer romance feel that included a water element. A bride splashing around in red gumboots met our criteria. Each group member was responsible for organizing the cover art for their individual novellas.

Ideal Number of Group Members

If all the individual titles are for sale prior to the box set group being organized, you can determine the ideal number of titles for your box set at the start. If the titles are being written under a deadline, it’s a good idea for the group to have a target number of titles in mind for the box set. With SPLASH!, we had original group members drop out and new group members join in later. Life happens, and it’s wise to assume that it might not be possible for all of your group members to submit their manuscript by the due date. For this reason we didn’t finalize the SPLASH! cover art until after the May 1 deadline had passed.

List of Instructions for Group Members

Our SPLASH! group leader had previously participated in box set collections, and she provided us with a document containing all the relevant deadlines and information we needed to submit. Being a new indie author, I found the checklist very helpful and it defined all of our responsibilities as group members.

Front and Back Matter

Each group member is responsible for independently publishing their own book, and providing front and back matter for the box set. This includes the individual novella cover art, book descriptions, author bio and photo, links, copyright and ISBN information, dedications and acknowledgements. For SPLASH!, I chose to keep my front and back matter to a minimum. My novella, His Perfect Catch, was the first title in the box set and the sample. The front and back matter will be more detailed in my individual novella release.

Writing, Writing, Writing!

If the stories are original releases that aren’t for sale prior to the box set release, the middle phase of the box set production process will see the group members writing their stories. The large majority of our SPLASH! group wrote their individual novellas during the three months leading up to our May 1 deadline. I appreciated the encouragement and support within the group as we checked in on our writing progress and worked hard to meet our deadlines.

Editing and Proof Reading

For SPLASH!, we agreed to submit an edited manuscript by the May 1 deadline. One of the first things I did was line up my freelance editor, Iola Goulton. I had to allow time for editing and proof reading prior to the May 1 deadline. During May, the group members had committed to proof reading a minimum portion of the SPLASH! draft document. The goal was to pick up any minor errors or formatting issues. The errors that were found during the group proof reading process needed to be fixed in the SPLASH! document, which would create additional work for the person formatting the box set. The group had a proof reading deadline to ensure that the manuscript was finalized prior to our Amazon pre-order deadline.

Book Promotion and Marketing Plan

During the middle phase, our SPLASH! group brainstormed book promotion and marketing ideas. We gradually put together a marketing plan as we worked toward our June 23 launch date. The plan included promotion before, during, and after the release of SPLASH! We looked at how we’d promote both our own individual titles and the box set.

Next Monday I’ll finish this series by discussing the final preparations for launching an indie box set collection.

Introducing His Perfect Catch

By Narelle Atkins

I'm thrilled to introduce my first independently published contemporary Christian romance novella. His Perfect Catch is available for a limited time in the SPLASH! box set collection. I'll be releasing His Perfect Catch as an individual title for 99 cents by mid-July.

The novella is a spin off story from my May 2015 Heartsong Presents release, Seaside Proposal. Billie and Zach from Seaside Proposal are minor characters in the story, and Mia is Billie's cousin. Sapphire Bay is a fictional town on the South Coast of NSW, Australia, and I'm planning to write more stories set in Sapphire Bay.

Book Description: Sydney girl Mia Radcliffe borrows her cousin’s beach house in Sapphire Bay, Australia, to escape the scandal surrounding her ex-fiancé. Her new neighbor is her secret crush from years ago… and she’s still captivated by the handsome builder who was a youth group leader at her church.

Living next door to Mia wasn’t part of Pete McCall’s plan when he started renovating his beach house. The blonde beauty inspires thoughts of settling down, despite her high maintenance ways and big-city dreams.

Love kindles during their time together and Mia’s heart is set on returning to Sydney with Pete. When new opportunities arise, Pete and Mia must decide if their love is for keeps.

Grab a tall glass of lemonade or iced tea and dip your toes into a cool pool of water on a hot summer’s day while you enjoy the never-before-released Christian romance novellas in SPLASH!

How to Write and Publish a Multi-Author Indie Box Set: The Beginning

By Narelle Atkins

Last week I talked about the benefits from participating in an indie box set collection and my experiences from publishing my first indie novella in SPLASH! Today I’m posting the first of a three part series on how to indie publish a fiction box set collection with a group of authors.

Genre

Defining the genre for your box set genre is essential if your goal is to gain visibility on the Amazon lists.

Individual Story Word Length

Will your box set include short stories, novelettes, novellas, short novels or longer novels?

Box Set Theme

From a marketing perspective, it’s helpful if your box set has a theme that connects all the stories. For example, SPLASH! has a water theme that’s reflected in the box set title and cover art. The theme can be easier to define if all the stories are new titles and written with the box set in mind. I wrote His Perfect Catch, my SPLASH! novella, knowing I needed to include a water theme in the story.

Organise a Group of Authors

Your group will need a leader, preferably an experienced indie author who has previously participated in a box set group project. The authors in our SPLASH! group came from a range of publishing backgrounds, including indie and traditional. I was one of the new indie authors and His Perfect Catch was my seventh release. I discovered that indie publishing is different to traditional publishing, and I was on a steep indie publishing learning curve when I joined the SPLASH! group.

Financial Arrangements

The financial arrangements need to be defined up-front to assist potential group members in making informed decisions before they join the group. What is your group budget for cover art, advertising? Will the money be paid up-front by group members, or deducted from book sales before the earnings are split between the group members? Do you need to pay for formatting, or can the group members do it themselves? How will your group be paid from online retailers? Who will distribute the earnings to the group members?

Box Set Pre-order and Release Dates

Is your box set a seasonal collection eg. Christmas, Valentine’s Day? The SPLASH! box set is a summer beach read novella collection. We chose June 23 as our release date, and set up our Amazon Kindle pre-order in early May. The Kindle pre-order option has specific deadlines and obligations that need to be met by the group.

Brand New Individual Titles vs. Titles Already For Sale

The SPLASH! box set contains brand new novellas that haven’t previously been released. Many box sets are compilations of books that are already available for sale.

Individual Book Release Dates

If the box set contains brand new titles, the group will need to decide on the preferred dates for the individual titles to be released by the authors. Marketing considerations will play a role in this decision. The release dates could also depend on how long the group plans to keep the box set for sale. For example, SPLASH! is a limited time offer and the individual novellas will be released in early July.

Deadlines for Group Members

The most important deadline for group members is the manuscript submission date. For SPLASH!, our group members committed to submitting their edited manuscripts by May 1. If the May 1 deadline wasn’t met, the box set production schedule, pre-order and release dates could have been adversely affected by the delay. Our group leader had a vacation planned in late May, and she had offered to format and upload the box set on the retail sites. We needed to give her enough time to have the initial files ready for a firm pre-order date, and time for proof reading by group members, prior to her vacation.

Box Set Book Production

An advantage of working with a group of experienced indie authors is they have different skill sets. Indie authors either contract out their book production work or they do it themselves. If the book production workload can be shared among the authors, the whole group will benefit from the cost savings.

Roles and Responsibilities of Group Leader and Group Members

It’s helpful to define from the start the group dynamics and expectations. This will help group members know exactly what is expected of them and what they’ll need to contribute to the group.

Box Set Price

The ebook price point will be a reflection of the group’s goals for the box set. We chose the 99 cents price point for SPLASH! One of our goals was to increase our visibility in the market and gain new readers, and a bargain priced box set met that criteria

Box Set Distribution

Your group could decide to publish exclusively with Amazon, or distribute wide to other retailers. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. If you distribute the box set wide, the individual titles can’t be put in the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Select program that requires exclusivity with Amazon.

Next Monday I’ll continue this series by talking about the middle phase of producing an indie box set.

The Benefits from Indie Publishing a Box Set Collection

By Narelle Atkins

My first indie novella is releasing tomorrow (US time) in a box set collection. I have six traditionally published books and I’ve been asked why I’ve chosen to pursue an indie box set opportunity. I’m going to share some of the benefits with you today.

Market Visibility

A goal for all authors to is to gain visibility in the market. I was looking for visibility on Amazon Kindle with readers in my sub-genre: Contemporary Christian Romance (CCR). There are nine CCR authors in my SPLASH! novella group and we come from a range of publishing backgrounds. By pooling our resources to produce the box set, we’re gaining exposure from a wider audience among our existing readerships.

Target a Specific Genre

If you’re looking for visibility on Amazon Kindle, it’s essential to target a niche sub-genre. Amazon uses the keywords and selected categories to determine the genre placement of books. It’s much easier to gain visibility on the Amazon Bestseller lists and Hot New Releases lists if all your stories in the box set are targeting a specific audience of readers in a particular sub-genre eg. CCR.

Amazon Bestseller Lists

One of your group goals may include pricing the box set in a way that will attract readers and help you climb the bestseller lists in your genre. The SPLASH! box set is priced at 99 cents for nine novellas. The Amazon Bestseller lists and Hot New Releases lists are the ebook equivalent to shelf space for print books in retail stores. Readers can browse these lists when they’re looking for ebooks to purchase in a particular genre. The rankings can be fleeting, and change on an hourly basis, but they do provide readers with an indication of which ebooks are selling.

Money

There can be financial benefits from participating in an indie box set. The SPLASH! group will earn 35% from Amazon Kindle sales at the 99 cents price point. Our goal is volume sales that will increase our visibility and grow our readerships.

Importance of Series and Backlist Sales

The box set collections provide a wonderful opportunity to introduce new readers to your book series. If readers like your story in the box set, they can easily click through to your other series titles and read the other books you have for sale. This can be a big financial benefit for authors with an extensive backlist.

Marketing and Promotion

The authors in the group can pool their resources to purchase the box set cover and undertake promotional activities. Each author can promote the box set and books by the other authors in the group. A marketing schedule can be set up for box set promotional activities.

For example, each novella in the SPLASH! collection will be individually released by the authors in July. The initial marketing focus is on the box set rather than the individual novellas. Nine novellas for 99 cents is a limited time offer and a great deal for readers.

Networking

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the other authors in the SPLASH! group. It’s fun to work together and I’ve learned so much from the more experienced indie authors in the group. We’re celebrating the release of SPLASH! with a Facebook Party Event on our release day. It was challenging to find a time zone that worked for authors living in North America, UK, South Africa and Australia. I’ll be online at 7am on Wednesday (Aussie time) to join the party (5pm-7pm US East Coast time on June 23).

Next Monday I’m starting a three part series on how to produce an indie box set collection.
