Interview and giveaway with Katherine Walden

By Jenny Blake

Today my friend and debut author Katherine Walden is joining us from Canada to share about her writing journey and her new book which we are also going to give away to one Commenter.

Hi Katherine, could you tell us a little about yourself?
I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and am a former missionary. I now oversee a large internet ministry, 'I lift My Eyes Ministries'. I am disabled, and live with a neuro-muscular disease.  I am an active member of my local church, serving in various roles such as; prayer coordinator, mentor and small group leader.

How did this book come about?
I have been writing weekly devotions for the past 15 years that I have published on the web at http://katherinewalden.com. These devotions are also sent out to a mailing list of about 1,000 people. Over the years, several of my followers have asked me to compile a book of these devotionals. After a few years of being asked to do so, I began the daunting process!

Can you tell us a little about the journey to make this book a reality?

 In April of 2014, I decided to bite the bullet, and began organizing, editing and proof-reading my archived devotions. I decided to split the devotions into three books. "Seasons" is the first book, and the theme and title became obvious to me as I sorted through hundreds of devotionals.  As many of my devotions are based on personal experiences, I marvelled at the elasticity of time. What once appeared to be long, hard seasons of all-consuming pain and adversity are now only faint memories. Simple, yet timely, acts of compassion shown towards me more than 30 years ago continue to impact me today.

I read one comment about how you are hoping your message of HOPE lifts people, is this what you want readers to take out of your book?
For much of my life, even as a Christian, I refused to entertain the thought of living with hope. I considered my pragmatism to be an admirable character trait and prided myself on being a realist. I thought cynicism was a great foundation for a successful life as it was a good starting point for gaining wisdom. Unfortunately, I was not a realist, I was in denial. The truth was: I was a dreamer, I was an artist, I was creative, I was an optimist. I allowed life's circumstances to crush the dreams inside, and I was afraid to hope again.  But the Bible says, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life." (Proverbs 13:12)  As I allowed myself to hope again, and as I placed my hope on Jesus Christ, my heart awakened again to the truth that the world is a wonderful place and God's dreams and hopes for me are so much bigger than my own. To hope is risky but to deny hope is disastrous. (Jenny here thanks for your answer here. for myself having a medical issue HOPE has become my lifeline. Hope for answers and help but also hope in Jesus to give me the strength to handle each day.)

I also know you are an Overseer at I Lift My Eyes Ministries can you tell us what this ministry is also?
I Lift My Eyes (ILME) is an internet ministry that started out in 1995 as a personal webpage. Just one small page. Since then, it has grown to a network of five websites consisting of about 2000 pages in total. I send out Daily Christian Quotes via email to close to 3000 people and have maintained an archive of those quotes since 2001. I also have a site that provides indices of bible verses, arranged by subject. I also have a large link index with over 1500 links to quality Christian resources. The prayer section of the ministry contains several articles on prayer as well as a prayer board where people can leave prayer requests. As we now live in the era of Social Media, much of my ministry is now on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+.

Do you have a message you would like to leave for our readers?
Ecclesiastes 3:1 - "There is a right time for everything, and everything on earth will happen at the right time."
If you are wondering if your spiritual winter will ever end, may I bring you His hope? Spring is on the horizon! Winter is but a season that will pass.

To end on a fun note if you could come and visit Australia and New Zealand what would you most like to do or see?

I would love to visit both Australia and New Zealand. Australia fascinated me as a child; my mother regularly corresponded with an old school friend who married an Aussie. I thought that Australia was exotic and mysterious. I learned in elementary school that toilets flush in the opposite direction down under, and I guess I never grew up, I would like to see if that is true! Tasmania has a mythical edge to me, mainly because of old cartoons I watched as a child that featured a Tasmanian Devil. The outback is a bit too out back for me as I am a city girl through and through. Seriously though, I would love to explore the cultural sites of Sydney and Brisbane and the Gold Coast.  After a good visit with friends who live in Australia, I would have to make a hop, skip and a long jump from Australia to New Zealand to visit friends I have there. I've always wanted to see the rugged beauty of New Zealand.

Thanks Katherine for sharing your journey.

Author Interview & Giveaway: Kacy Barnett-Gramckow

By Ellie Whyte

Kacy Barnett-Gramckow is the author of Dawnlight, a Biblical Novel inspired by Matthew 27:52-53, as well as Moody Publisher's THE GENESIS TRILOGY.  Kacy also writes Christian fantasy fiction as R.J. Larson.

Kacy finds research almost as interesting as writing, and she brings a lively knowledge of history to bear on her settings and characters.

She and her husband, Jerry, have been married for more than thirty years, and they live in Colorado.

The following is a recent interview with Kacy.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m an ordinary person who happens to write—my effort to deal with my huge imaginary inner world. Writing allows me to pour my daydreams (and nightmares) into the computer, ridding my mind of its excesses. However, my imagination retaliates by concocting new storylines, which threaten to take over my every waking thought. Not good when I’m working full time and trying to keep track of my busy family!

Writing is also my quiet ministry. I love to reach people’s hearts and souls with my stories!

How did you become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

I never intended to become a writer, but I’ve always had classic author traits. I began imagining stories almost as soon as I could form full sentences. As soon as I learned to read at age five, I read everything.  Vitamin labels, cereal boxes, encyclopedias, the dire warning tags on furniture, and every book my parents handed to me—in addition to all the books I carried home from our local library.

I simply loved-LOVED to read.

Writing professionally, however, never crossed my mind until my sister-in-law, Kathi Macias, became an editor. I was in my twenties when she showed me a manuscript she was editing. I don’t remember the author’s name or even the book’s subject. I looked at that neat stack of pages with all those words, and I thought, “I can do that!”

I wrote a 300,000 word medieval tome, which is still unpublished, but a terrific apprenticeship. While I was writing, I showed a few chapters to Kathi, and she promptly volunteered me as a contributor to a collection of devotionals. More devotionals followed, and my circle of publishing contacts grew.

One of my editors later became an agent and she asked if I was still writing. By then, I’d moved into the Biblical fiction realm, and offered her a manuscript, The Heavens Before, which was published under my true name. Within five months, Moody Publishers offered me a contract for a three-book series, which is still in print.

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

Christian fiction offers food for the soul, and eternal hope, which is rarely found in secular fiction. Humans are born with the innate need to connect with their universe and to worship—a longing which must be expressed and experienced. This longing to worship often turns inward, with self-worship. Or we worship idols, sometimes in the form of Hollywood stars, or royalty. But for those who are searching—no matter what they believe or worship—fiction helps readers clarify their personal values as they enjoy other lives through the printed word.

This is why soul-inspiring fiction is so vital, and why I pray over each manuscript as I’m working. Fiction provides a neutral realm for readers to sort through many of life’s difficult questions. Moreover, Christian fiction entertains and serves those who believe in the Lord and who seek eternal, Biblical ways to deal with modern problems, or ancient ones.

For writers, that’s a big responsibility. Scary, even….

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

Above all, I want them to love the characters and react with them as they confront the challenges and fears we all face. I’d also hope that my protagonists will allow readers to explore the ancient Scriptures from new perspectives, offering fresh views on the Book we all love.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

When a reader contacts me and writes, “I was in the same situation. I suffered the same hurt,” I always pause and pray.  When a reader writes, “This story made me dig deeper into the Word…” I celebrate!!!

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

My worship, my adoration of the Lord has deepened.  I have always loved Him and honored Him, but as I noted earlier, I pray over each new story for His will. I’m always amazed by the Lord’s boundless love and grace in every aspect of my life. Writing has been an unexpected gift from my Creator!

Other than writing great novels, what other goals do you have for your life?

To eventually be the very best worst grandmother in the world. I’m already practicing my line: “Yes, whatever you want, honey!” Not to mention my smile as I hand the kid back to his or her parents! Hehehe!

As a writer, what influences have inspired you the most to write, and continue writing?

My mother's abiding love of books and my own love of stories proved to be my earliest influences. Our home was filled with books and the instant I learned to read, I routinely raided my mother's bookshelves for novels.

My passion for the written word was so limitless that I began to write at age 23--on a whim at midnight!--and I've never stopped. I'm constantly thinking of stories and characters. The problem is that I don't have the time to type then into the computer!

Every writer struggles with various aspects of their writing journey. What has been the most difficult aspect of writing for you, and what come the most naturally?

Time is my most consistent struggle. I work full-time outside the home, and so my two days off a week are devoted to writing. I have to use my time wisely and focus on my work. Fortunately, my characters are always rattling around in my thoughts, and their unending busy-ness is only hushed when I can pour their storylines from my thoughts into my computers.

What's easiest and most natural is envisioning my characters. I'm a very visual learner and writer. I can see and hear my characters as they're dealing with their none-too-quiet daily lives. Even the smallest, most minor character has a story to tell. The problem is making them all behave and obey my word counts!

What is one piece of advice you would like to give to aspiring writers - either something you adhere to, or something you wish you had known when you started writing?

Take advice and persist! That's actually two pieces of advice, but they work well together. Listen to what industry professionals are telling you--particularly if you hear the same advice more than once--and then put that advice to work, patiently and diligently. You can't write one manuscript, glance it over, and then fling it out into the WorldWideWeb and expect it to gain traction. Good writing is the result of a solid apprenticeship and learning your craft.

As a reader, which stories excite you the most to read, and do you have any favourite novelists?

I read many genres and have many author-friends I love and respect. Off the top, I'd say, Donita K. Paul, Susan Meissner, Siri Mitchell and Tosca Lee.

I love solid, richly detailed historicals, vibrant and active YA--clean, not smutty--and I adore fantasy in most forms. The characters have to be real to me!

Well-researched biographies always draw me in; I've read biographies since third grade, even if I had to keep my thesaurus at hand to look up words.

What are some of your most favourite places on the internet to visit, that help challenge you as a writer, and encourage you as a reader?

Soul Inspirationz is beautiful--perhaps you've heard of it. I love visiting the site during my rare free moments!
http://www.christianfictionsite.com/

Book Fun/Book Club is great and encourages writers to interact with readers: http://www.bookfun.org/

I also visit bookstores online. Not just Amazon, but Christian Book Distributors and others. It helps to see what's selling, and how other authors are writing from year to year. Even if you've been writing for decades, it's important to stay fresh. ACFW is also a wonderful resource and they have great conferences! Even introverts need to step away from their computers and socialize once in awhile.

What can you tell us about your most recent and upcoming novels?

Right now, I'm finishing up my fantasy series as R. J. Larson. I expect to begin the (thus far) last book of the Infinite series this month. R. J. Larson's Prophet is free through July! https://tinyurl.com/pt39qbd

Exiles and Queen should both be published this year through Elk Lake, which is a new publishing company run by Fred St Laurent of BookFun fame.

As Kacy Barnett-Gramckow, my latest novel Dawnlight (based on Matthew 27:52-53) was published this spring and readers are proclaiming it a multiple-hankie read. Admittedly, I cried through certain scenes, no matter how many times I read them, as I was working on the manuscript, but I didn't intentionally set out to write a handkerchief book. I've been reassured that the joyous ending more than makes up for all the weeping!

I wrote Dawnlight because my very persuasive and persistent youngest brother, Joseph, told me I should. In retaliation, I named one of the characters after him, and then the character immediately took ill. My brother has cheerfully dealt with the matter, but he hasn't suggested any new writing musts for me recently, and no wonder. The character ends well, I promise!

Do you have any parting words?

Thank you, readers! You're so appreciated! Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions; I'd love to hear from you. http://www.gramcoink.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/RJLarson.Writes

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. All my children and grandchildren live close to me, except a grandson who is in the US Army. I live in Texas with my wonderful husband of over 48 years. And I write novels.

How did you become a novelist, and did you always want to write?

I grew up in a family where everyone wrote, not for publication, just wrote. I didn't know everyone didn't write until I was almost an adult. I actually have a BA, and most of a Master's degree in Drama. I actually didn't begin writing professionally until 1984 when God used the events of one week in May to tell me to become a professional writer. You can read the testimony about that on the About Me page of my website: www.lenanelsondooley.com

What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?

I love to read and can get lost in an interesting story. I believe many people are that way. An author can use Christian fiction to depict how a person's daily life can be impacted by the presence of God. That's what I try to show without being preachy in any way.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

Every author hopes that readers will like their stories. But I've learned over the years that you can't please everyone all the time. I just hope that my books will reach the people who can be most affected in a positive way with the stories.

What responses to your novels have affected you the most and why?

I love to hear from readers, whose lives have changed because of a story of mine they read. And they do contact me. Sometimes I even cry when I read how a story made a dynamic difference.

How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

I have loved the Lord for a long time. He is woven so deeply into my life that the relationship spills over into the stories I write. I believe that is what true Christian fiction is all about.

Other than writing great novels, what other goals do you have for your life?

I want to bless the Lord with my life. I cannot bless Him even a small part of the amount he blesses me, but I want to. It's important to me to keep my marriage alive and vital. Being a good mother, grandmother, friend--all of these are important as well.

As a writer, what influences have inspired you the most to write, and continue writing?

Knowing in my heart that God created me to be a writer in my mother's womb. In late December when I was seeking God about His word for me in 2014, He told me that He had woven into my DNA all the gifts and talents that I would need this year, so this is a year of Destiny for me.

Every writer struggles with various aspects of their writing journey. What has been the most difficult aspect of writing for you, and what come the most naturally?

Putting the words on paper is easy for me. Usually, ideas spend a lot of time in my head, forming and reforming until they're just right. That's when I pur them on paper.
The most diofficult part is the waiting--waiting for my agent to find a publisher who's interested in my proposal(s), waiting while a publisher goes through all the steps that lead to a contract.
Waiting for the publication date to arrive. AS you can see, I'm not the post patient person on this planet.

What is one piece of advice you would like to give to aspiring writers - either something you adhere to, or something you wish you had known when you started writing?

Give your writing gift back to the Creator of that gift. Then seek Him as you write. He'll keep you on the right track.

As a reader, which stories excite you the most to read, and do you have any favourite novelists?

I love to read, all kinds of genres, except horror. And yes I have favorite authors, but the list is quite long. I invite your readers to visit my blog. http://lenanelsondooley.blogspot.com
My blog received the TBCN Readers Choice 2013 Blog of the Year AWard. I interview other authors and help promote their books. If you follow this blog, you'll soon discern many of my favorite authors.

What are some of your most favourite places on the internet to visit, that help challenge you as a writer, and encourage you as a reader?

I follow a lot of Christian Authors' blogs and Facebook pages. It helps me keep up with what's happening in our field.

What can you tell us about your most recent and upcoming novels?

If you haven't read them, I'd invite you into the world of my McKenna's Daughters series. Set in the 1880s near the west coast of the US, it's the stories of identical triplets, born on one of the last wagon trains on the Oregon Trail. Their mother dies giving birth, and they are separated. They don't find out until near their 18th birthdays that they have sisters.
MAGGIE'S JOURNEY, MARY'S BLESSING, and CATHERINE'S PURSUIT. MAGGIE'S JOURNEY won the Selah Award. MARY'S BLESSING finaled in the Selah, and CATHERINE'S PURSUIT is in contests right now.

My next project is adapting another author's novel into a movie screenplay. I'm excited about this new projected. ABDUCTED TO KILL should release late this year or early 2015.

Do you have any parting words?

Spend time with the Lord. He's the only one who will never leave you and has only your best in mind.

What inspires you? (plus an ebook giveaway)

By Lisa Harris

As a writer, I’m always looking for inspiration. That nugget of a story that simmers in the back of my mind until finally, it’s ready to be put down on paper. I love discovering new characters and new plots. For me, it’s invigorating and simply put, fun.

As a young girl, I used to imagine myself writing in some secluded cabin in the middle of the woods. Soft music played in the background, snow drifted past my window, before dusting the ground with a layer of white powder. With a fire roaring in the background, I sat in front of my typewriter—yes, this was a long time ago—producing bestseller after bestseller.

Right. Somehow that never happened.

When I started writing, my kids were young, so reality for me was scrambling to find a few moments to write while the kids took a nap, or while Dora the Explorer sang in the background. I’d quickly peal the peanut butter and jelly sandwich from the keyboard and brush off the cheerios from my chair and write. Finding inspiration wasn’t exactly on the menu. I had to learn to sit down and write, inspired or not.

But no matter who we are, I think it’s safe to say that we all long to feel inspired. Whether it’s writing a book or a poem, creating a stunning dish in the kitchen, listening to music, taking a class that challenges us, or simply being inspired to be a better person, we all need inspiration.

I’ve also found that in the busy world we live in, I need to be intentional in finding that inspiration. Which means intentionally stopping to be quiet, listening for God’s voice, taking a quiet walk in a garden, or making sure I don’t miss the colors of the sunset.

Here are a few things that inspired me:

Friends and family

My children

The African bush

Music

Books

Gardens

Laughter

Sunsets

Stars

What about you? What inspires you?

~~~
Lisa latest book is a romantic suspense from Revell.
When two Jane Does are killed on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, detective and behavioral specialist Avery North discovers they share something in common--a tattoo of a magnolia on their shoulders. Suspecting a serial killer, Avery joins forces with medical examiner Jackson Bryant to solve the crimes and prevent another murder. But it doesn't take long for them to realize that there is much more to the case than meets the eye. As they venture deep into a sinister world of human trafficking, Avery and Jackson are taken to the very edge of their abilities--and their hearts.
Dangerous Passage exposes a fully-realized and frightening world where every layer peeled back reveals more challenges ahead. Romantic suspense fans will be hooked from the start by Lisa Harris's first installment of the new Southern Crimes series.
ebook giveaway for Australian and New Zealand readers:
Lisa has kindly offered to give away an ebook copy of Dangerous Passage to an Australian or New Zealand reader who leaves a comment on this post. The winner will be announced in the post comments on Tuesday, 3rd December.
She and her family have spent almost ten years living as missionaries in Africa where she homeschools, leads a women’s group, and runs a non-profit organization that works alongside their church-planting ministry.
