Photographic Inspiration

Have you ever looked at a photograph and had a story pop into your head? I have. Ever since I can remember, pictures have inspired my love of storytelling. When I was writing my Resolution series, I would often refer to my old photos of beach and ocean to inspire a scene I was writing. I would even pile the family into the tinny and take a run around the islands, just to acquire some new photographic inspiration. Quite often I have poured over old photos and unearthed new themes for blog posts, or looked through the lens of my camera, knowing the photo I was taking would be perfect for my next story.
The only issue I have regarding my petulance for photo inspiration is the myriad of photographs I have sitting on file, waiting for me to have time to write about them. Like this one:

Every time I view this photo, new plot ideas flash into my head.
Lucky for me, we are in the digital age, where you can take as many photographs as your device’s storage will allow, so I keep adding to the pile and work towards the day when I can fill each photo with characters and plots.
What about you? What photographs have inspired your storytelling? Does this photo inspire you? I’d love to know what you think about it.

  1. It's a fantastic photo Rose brimful of stories :) I've inspired by a dream but, so far, no photos. Perhaps if I start writing contemporary or historical rather than fantasy - I may be. Looking forward to the stories you write around this one.

    1. I find amazing inspiration in dreams too, Jeanette. But I've found that if I don't get the ideas down on paper first thing in the morning, a lot of it gets lost. :-(

  2. This happens all the time. My latest work in progress came about after seeing a house for sale on the Internet!

    1. Inspiration can come from some unusual sources - that's for sure. But it certainly is a great blessing - however it comes. I would hate to have nothing to write about. :-)

  3. Rose, incredible all the different places we can draw inspiration from. Like Jeanette, photos don't usually do it for me. Strangely I look at advertising on buses and bus shelters which often provide me with inspiration for characters.

That's a wonderful photo, full of stories. My mind when to a murder mystery for some reason. Lots of secrets hidden underneath the house.

Thanks, Rose, for stimulating my imagination. Just what I needed for the rest of the arvo.

    1. You are most welcome, Ian. We must think a bit alike, because my mind also goes to a murder mystery. The combination of house and place has a mysterious air about it.
I can see where those big advertising campaigns would inspire you. I must admit that I always notice them when I'm in the city.

  4. Great picture - it has a real sense of atmosphere. Something must have happened there - maybe Ian's right, and it's the location of a murder. Or perhaps someone is hiding there, and the run-down outside is merely a disguise for the beauty within ...

    1. Very likely someone is living there. It's surprising how inhabited these old country houses are. Has to be a mystery story of some sort. It was the day too - cold and foggy, and the tree at the front of the photo added to the spooky- ness. OH - the possibilities. :-)

  5. Fabulous photo, Rose! Maybe it's the old cottage on a family property where the great-grandparents first lived when they settled in the area but no one goes near it now because ...
