Tuesday Book Chat | 10 July 2018 | Iola Goulton

It's Iola here. Welcome to our ACW Tuesday Book Chat, where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Do you read reviews before buying a book?

I'm a book reviewer. I write book reviews. But do you read them? Do you find them useful?

Please join in the conversation in a comment on this post or in a comment on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group. Or, if you're feeling wordy (like me), write a blog post and link to it in the comments.

Let's chat! Do you read reviews before buying a book?

  1. I’m far more likely to choose a book based on blog reviews and recommendations than reading Amazon or Goodreads reviews 😬

  2. I think that's funny, because most of the Amazon and Goodreads reviewers I know also review on their blogs. I do admit that on the rare occasions I look at Amazon reviews, I usually only read the ones by reviewers I know from their blogs.

  3. I do too. I trust ones by reviewers I'm familiar with, but even if I don't know who they are, sometimes I get the idea through the tone and content of the review.

  4. All the time. But I will usually trust some key readers that I've found have a good eye for what I like. I'm also conscious of the "early reviewers" who will more often than not be close to the author and therefore, their review may be a little generous. (Hey, in saying that I recognise some of my reviews are similarly generous).

Funny, I just finished a novella and read the reviews which were all great and I've wondered if they read the same story as me as I don't have the same view. But that's one of the wonders of reading isn't it? We all get different interpretations and impressions.

  5. I read reviews if I'm uncertain about the book. I rarely read reviews for books in a series I love before getting the book. and even if I do it's not to decide if I want it.
If I think I'd probably like the book, I may read reviews to give myself grounds for buying it. Or in one very recent case, there was a book by an author I'd enjoyed before but not in a genre I'm really fond of. I wanted to buy it, but I really wasn't sure I'd want to read it. So I read reviews.
I'm usually a fairly spontaneous reader, so I'll get books without reading nay reviews if the price is right.
