What Next? (plus Seaside Proposal book giveaway)

This week I'm celebrating the release of Seaside Proposal, my sixth and final book with Harlequin’s Love Inspired Heartsong Presents line. It’s a bittersweet celebration in many ways because next month marks the end of an era in Christian Romance publishing. 

In November 2014 Harlequin announced they were closing the Heartsong Presents line. Harlequin had acquired the line from Barbour only a few years earlier. The last four Heartsong books are releasing in June 2015. 

Last year my agent, Steve Laube, wrote a post on Heartsong’s Publishing Legacy. Ellie Whyte has a list of the 1148 Heartsong Presents titles published between 1992 and 2015 on the Soul Inspirationz site. My mentor, Mary Hawkins, was published by Heartsong in the early years. Mary’s first Heartsong release with Barbour in 1993 was Search for Tomorrow, number 42 in the series. 

Back in March 2013 I signed a six book contract with Heartsong. I was fortunate that Seaside Proposal was scheduled for release prior to the line closing. Many of my Heartsong author friends had book contracts cancelled and my lovely editor lost her job in the restructure.

Publishing is a tough business. Heartsong published my contemporary Christian romances that are set outside of the USA. All six of my Heartsong books are set in Australia.

There’s no longer a market niche with a large traditional publisher for my Aussie stories. A few years ago this development may have stalled my publishing career. The rise of indie publishing has created wonderful opportunities for authors to publish books that don’t fit into the traditional publishing model.

Zach and Billie, my hero and heroine in Seaside Proposal, are living on as minor characters in a spin-off indie novella. His Perfect Catch, featuring Billie's cousin, will independently release in a contemporary Christian romance novella box set next month titled SPLASH! It’s exciting to work on a publishing project with an innovative group of Christian romance author friends. I’ll be sharing more information on my novella release very soon and here's a preview of the box set cover.

Issue-based Christian fiction (plus book giveaway)

Last year I was on a romance panel at the CALEB Christian Writing Conference with ACW members Mary Hawkins and Andrea Grigg. We discussed the faith element in Christian romance novels and the power of story to share spiritual truths with our readers. Many Christian fiction writers have a strong desire to share their faith with readers through the lives of their characters. Jesus used parables and stories to teach his disciples and followers Biblical truths. 

An important question all Christian fiction writers should ask is why do I want to write Christian fiction? I’m a storyteller and I love creating stories for the characters who live in my overactive imagination. My faith is an integral part of my life, and the hero and heroine in my contemporary inspirational romances each have a spiritual story arc. Their faith grows and matures during the story.

A criticism that’s often leveled at Christian fiction is the books are preachy and bang the reader over the head with a faith message. How can writers avoid being preachy? The writing craft technique of showing the story rather than telling the story is a practical way to address this problem. It’s rare to read a long narrative conversion scene in Christian fiction books published in recent years.

I believe the fundamental answer to the preachy fiction question relates to a writer’s motivation. Story rules, irrespective of genre. Writing a beautifully crafted story that entertains readers should be our primary goal if we’re writing for publication. Readers pick up a fiction book because they want to be entertained and escape into a great story. They may prefer a lighthearted story, or a story that tackles deeper issues, but a well written story is always an essential ingredient. 

During the romance writing panel, I generated a collective gasp in the room by voicing the following statement: If your main goal for writing Christian romance is to share your spiritual message, do the romance readers a favour by writing your message as non-fiction. 

Readers who are looking for answers to specific spiritual questions usually turn to the Bible, their pastor, or non-fiction sources. If you visit a typical Christian book store in Australia, you’ll find eighty plus percent of the shelf space for books is Bibles and non-fiction books.

I occasionally read Christian fiction stories that tackle issues. Story can be an effective way to teach us how to empathize with people who are in difficult situations. Through their point of view we can gain valuable insights into how they think, feel and respond in specific circumstances. We can experience their emotional roller coaster and cheer them on as they seek to overcome problems and obstacles in the story. 

In my new contemporary inspirational romance release, Her Tycoon Hero, the story touches on alcoholism and addiction issues. Alcoholism is an element in the story and my heroine, Cassie, is a recovering alcoholic and new Christian. But, the core story is the developing romance between Cassie and Ryan. Cassie’s alcoholism and past behaviour has created problems that impact the story. One example is her difficult relationship with her father. He struggles to believe that she has changed and her faith has made her a better person.

Andrea’s Review:

There are a number of reasons I enjoyed this book. Number one, it’s by our own Narelle Atkins J Second, it’s about Luke, a character from a previous book who intrigued me back then, and I like spin-offs. Third, I have a thing for broken romances being made whole, especially when it takes place years down the track. I enjoy the tension created by those situations and Narelle didn’t disappoint. Fourth, it’s set in rural Australia.

It’s obvious this book is written for the American market; some of the sayings and phrases are definitely not Australian, eg. mom rather than mum, grill as opposed to barbecue, but I loved that. Why? Because the setting is pure Australia and it means our USA friends get to read all about our wonderful country. Narelle’s descriptive writing makes Snowgum Creek a character in its own right. I really want to go there!

For me, this is a coming-of-age story. Readers will know of someone just like Megan, or even relate directly to her. She has done exactly what she wanted – travelled the world, and experienced life outside of Snowgum Creek – but at the expense of her relationship with family, friends, God … and Luke. Coming back to her hometown is a challenge to say the least, one she’s not sure she’ll be able to see through, especially when an enticing opportunity comes her way.

Luke is glad to see her, but wary of entering into a relationship with Megan again. And why wouldn’t he be? Regardless, his love for her is stronger than his misgivings, and he risks his heart once more.

Even though the characters in a romance must get their HEA (Happy Ever After), the resulting up and down journey had me turning the pages faster toward the end to make sure they did.

The Doctor’s Return is a sweet romance, and I highly recommend it. Here’s hoping there are more Snowgum Creek novels to come.

What's on your Writing Bucket List? (plus book giveaway)

Do you have goals, dreams and aspirations for your writing? A number of years ago I created an evolving list of writing-related goals and dreams I hoped to achieve and fulfil. I called it my writing bucket list. 

A bucket list is effectively a numbered list of goals you want to achieve, dreams you want to realize and life experiences you want to have before you die. For example, 101 Things To Do Before You Die.

My writing bucket list is evolving, rather than static, because my writing journey has taken a number of twists and turns over the years. I prayerfully consider my list and I’ve learned to wait on His perfect timing.

The Single Dad Hero in Romance Novels (plus book giveaway)

The single dad hero is a popular storyline in the romance genre. My publisher, Harlequin, has a Glossary of Terms for the Romance Novel Novice on their website. The Single Father/Parent stories are defined as Stories highlighting the particular challenges of finding love as a single parent.

There are different dynamics at play in a romance story involving parents of small children. The romance plot will include the children in some capacity. The children may play a large or small role in the story, and the heroine will be falling in love with a ready-made family. 

Huffington Post published an article last year titled Single Dad: Should you date one? Romance writers find these types of articles interesting from a research perspective. The article talks about the potential problems and pitfalls facing women who date single fathers. Problems and pitfalls equal potential story ideas for creating conflict in a romance plot. 

The back story for a single dad romance can evolve in a myriad of ways in a general market romance. In contrast, a single dad hero in an inspirational/Christian romance is often a widower who has lost his wife in tragic circumstances. Christian publishers are aware that a portion of their readership may hold conservative values. As a result, they may choose not to publish romances with divorced main characters. 

Ben Morton, my hero in The Nurse’s Perfect Match, is an apple farmer and single dad who lost his wife to cancer. He struggles to understand why a loving God would take away the mother of his children. His late wife was also a Christian, and they had a strong marriage. Her death triggered a faith crisis in his life. 

My heroine, Amy Wilkins, is a widow who lost her husband when her marriage was in crisis. Her late husband made a cameo appearance in Falling for the Farmer. He was the big city doctor with his ear glued to his phone during the photo session after Amy’s sister’s wedding. Amy moves back home to Snowgum Creek. She works as a nurse in the medical clinic owned by Ben’s younger brother, Luke. 

Ben’s two children, Chloe and Declan, are minor characters who play an important role in the story. The romance plot would fall apart if Chloe and Declan weren’t in it. I think they’re cute kids, with their own unique personalities and quirks. They aren’t perfect children, and they do test their father’s patience at times. Chloe forms a special bond with Amy during the story. 

Their Uncle Luke and Aunty Rachel, Ben’s siblings, plus their paternal grandparents, are very proactive and involved in their lives. Luke is the hero in The Doctor’s Return, the next book in the series. 

Why do romance readers find single dad hero's appealing? I think the Huffington Post article provides a few answers to this question. The single dad hero has grown up, matured, and is taking care of himself and his children. He has proven he’s not going to disappear and shirk his family responsibilities. 

The heroine’s maternal instincts are awakened. She sees his nurturing and sensitive side by the way he loves and interacts with his children. Her heart is touched because she can envisage receiving the same love and tenderness from him. 

NURSE AMY WILKINS HAS COME HOME 

After her marriage ends in tragedy, Amy returns to Snowgum Creek to rebuild her life. There she meets widower Ben Morton, who's not looking for romance, though his young children are eager for Amy's attention. She's given up on her dream of being a mother, but can't ignore how she's drawn to Ben's little ones, and to their handsome farmer dad. 

As love kindles between Ben and Amy, she worries how she'll ever measure up to the wife he lost. And Ben is concerned about how Amy will ever truly fit into life on the farm. They could be the answer to each other's prayers—if the secret Amy is keeping doesn't tear them apart.

Interview with Lesley Ann McDaniel

1.    Can you tell us something interesting readers may not know about you?

Well, people might not know that I’ve worked in professional costuming for years. I’ve worked on lots of Broadway tours, and a few movies. Observing people in this crazy business has proven helpful in developing characters for my books. (Jenny here wow that's so cool.  I bet you met some interesting people)

2.    Where did you get the inspiration for "Rocky Mountain Romance"?

The inspiration for my “Montana Hearts” series basically came from growing up in Montana, even though I’ve never lived anywhere near a ranch. The idea for this particular book pretty much sprang up from the first book in the series, “Lights, Cowboy, Action”. That was where I first met Sheila and Ben, and decided it would be fun to develop their story. 

3.    What did you find most fun in writing these books?

The most fun thing about writing this series was getting to escape to Thornton Springs, Montana. It’s a fictional town, but it was inspired by a couple of real places in Montana. I could easily live in a small town, although of course there’s an advantage to being able to invent the ideal place.

4.    What would you like readers to take out of reading your books?

Of course the first thing is for them to be entertained. I love it when readers tell me they enjoyed visiting Thornton Springs and didn't want to leave. The underlying hope of course is that readers will be inspired by the lessons learned by the characters.

5.    A fun question to end. If you were to recommend somewhere in Montana for readers to visit where would it be?

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you haven’t visited Montana until you’ve been to the Sweet Palace in Philipsburg. It’s an old fashioned candy store that’s bound to make anybody happy.  (Sounds good to this Aussie may have to add Montana to my list for my next trip to the States, actually it was on the list but this shop sounds devine)
